Tickets still available for The Book of Mormon at Theatre Royal Plymouth

Looking for a comedy musical theatre show with a difference this month? ‘The Book of Mormon’ has just started its run at Theatre Royal Plymouth and some tickets are still up for grabs.

Like it or not, you simply can’t complain that ‘South Park’ wasn’t groundbreaking. The cartoon series — which is hardly PC — has smashed boundaries over the years and it’s still going strong today.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone — also behind the animated movie ‘Team America: World Police’ — created the ‘South Park’ series and became household names thanks to their bold narratives, courageous approaches and willingness to take on any subject. And by that we mean any subject, no matter how close to the knuckle.

‘The Book of Mormon’, on the other hand, uses similar techniques as ‘South Park’ but there’s a whole new approach here too, given that it has been made for the stage. In the show, it’s religion that gets the Stone-and-Parker treatment, with help from Bobby Lopez, the co-writer of ‘Avenue Q’ and ‘Frozen’. It’s an outrageous comedy musical that follows the adventures of a pair of Mormon missionaries who venture way out of their comfort zone.

With nine Tony awards and four Olivier awards behind it, smash-hit musical ‘The Book of Mormon’, which was first staged in early 2011, is a tour de force. The new-look show opened in Manchester in September 2024 and heads to Theatre Royal Plymouth for a run between Tuesday 14 and Saturday 25 January 2025. And there are plenty of tickets still available if you get in quick.

The show runs for two hours and 20 minutes. Adam Bailey plays Elder Price and Sam Glen is Elder Cunningham in the show, with Nyah Nish as Nabulungi, Tom Bales as Elder McKinley and Will Barratt as the famous Joseph Smith. The musical has smashed long-standing box office records in London, Melbourne, New York, Sydney and other cities since it was created.

You must be over 14 years old to watch the show as there’s some explicit language and, in Stone and Parker style, plenty of adult themes throughout. But if you are over 14, then the show is worth it. Then prepare to go door-to-door and spread the word about one of the best musical comedies in recent years at one of the top theatres in the UK.
