Rock, metal and classical meet at The Rock Orchestra by Candlelight show at Plymouth Pavilions

When rock and metal meet classical music, something special happens. That deep emotional connection that heavy guitars, drums and bass evoke in an audience is transferred to strings, flutes and other classical instruments that only serve to heighten the atmosphere. It’s effective, it’s different and when it’s done well, it’s awe-inspiring.

The Rock Orchestra by Candlelight shows across the UK are certainly done well and are almost always awe-inspiring. If you love rock and metal music and want to see and hear your favourite tracks presented in a new (candle)light then this show at the Plymouth Pavilions on Tuesday 18 February 2025 is just for you.

From 8pm, the orchestra takes the Pavilions audience on a journey through some of the most dramatic, melodic and greatest rock and metal songs from history. The oh-so-talented musicians will play these tracks in their inimitable classical style with flutes, cellos, violins, guitars, drums, double basses and much more besides.

Plus, all the music is set against a breathtaking backdrop of candles, skulls and all sorts of objets d’art, making for a grand sight that accompanies the songs perfectly in the dark. The costumes are also in equal parts spooky and beautiful. Prepare for an incredible experience from the first riff to the last.

At the time of writing, there were still tickets left for this performance so snap them up now. This Plymouth Pavilions gig is part of a 2025 tour for The Rock Orchestra by Candlelight, which returns to the Millbay venue for this new 90-minute concert that breathes ‘beautifully dark energy into legendary rock and metal’ music from the past 50 years.

A Pavilions spokesman says that ‘this band of 14 classical musicians unleash effortlessly enchanting melodies alongside powerful walls of distortion’. We’re asked to ‘witness the unexpected union of classical music and metal’.

The orchestra — a rotating collective of classical musicians and great vocalists — has mesmerised audiences across the USA and Europe. Expect songs by the likes of Guns N’ Roses, Rage Against The Machine, Metallica, AC/DC, My Chemical Romance, The Cranberries and much more at this electric show in Plymouth in February. Rock on, Plymouth!
