Discover the Rich History of Devonport Naval Heritage Centre at the Dazzle Festival
As part of the Devonport 200 Dazzle Festival, Devonport Naval Heritage Centre (DNHC) will be opening its doors for a special evening on Saturday, 1st March, from 17:30 to 20:00.
This exclusive event offers a unique opportunity to explore one of Plymouth’s most significant historical sites ahead of its official reopening for the spring season on March 26th, 2025.
A cornerstone of Devonport’s maritime heritage, the Heritage Centre showcases the evolution of the Royal Navy and the Dockyard’s critical role in major conflicts, including both World Wars. For history enthusiasts, families, and those simply looking for an unforgettable experience, this is a must-visit destination during the Dazzle Festival.
A Journey Through Naval History
The Devonport Naval Heritage Centre is a treasure trove of artefacts, galleries, and interactive exhibits. The site itself consists of several historic buildings, each playing a role in telling the story of Britain’s naval power.
The Old Fire Station (1851)
Home to “The Age of Sail Gallery,” this building highlights Devonport’s contributions to the sailing navy and wooden shipbuilding. A new addition, the Paul Santillo Gallery, now houses an extensive post-war model ship collection, two dramatic ship figureheads, and other large maritime artefacts.
The Dockyard Superintendent’s and Pay Office (18th Century)
This building houses five fascinating galleries:
The Warspite Gallery – Discover the transition of naval ships from wood to steel and sail to steam. The centrepiece is a stunning three-metre-long model of HMS Warspite as she appeared at the Battle of Jutland in 1916.
The Devonport Gallery – Delve into Devonport’s role in two World Wars, including the pivotal Battle of Jutland.
The Courageous Gallery – Step into the world of the Royal Navy’s Submarine Service. A highlight of this gallery is the hands-on, fully operational submarine periscope offering real-time views of the Hamoaze. The exhibit also features an interactive digital walkthrough of HMS Courageous, providing visitors with a near-authentic submarine experience.
Victualling Through the Ages – Explore the history of how the Royal Navy has been supplied with food and drink over the centuries, including the significance of rum in naval life. This exhibit also displays fine china and tableware from the Royal Yacht Victoria and Albert.
Uniform Through the Ages – View a remarkable collection of naval uniforms, medals, ceremonial swords, and even a pair of size 17 sailor’s boots!
A Collection Steeped in History
