PLYMOUTH CONCERTS – NEW PROMOTER – NEW PIANO
The 30th International Series of classical music concert series run by Jeanie Moore MVO has been taken over by new organisation Plymouth Concerts which will run the three recitals Jeanie had planned and add three more. All are on Sunday afternoons at Stoke Damerel Church.
Plymouth Concerts committee is headed by ex-GP Mark Newberry. Treasurer Charles Morgan has bought a beautifully restored Grotrian-Steinweg grand piano. This has been installed in Stoke Damerel Church, which will continue as the very welcoming venue for classical music. The host is the church’s event liaison officer Marilyn Goldsbrough. The programmer is Plymouth composer Clive Jenkins.
First up and first to play the excellent new piano will be international pianist Margaret Fingerhut who is appearing with violinist Peter Fisher in a programme featuring music by Beethoven, Brahms, Kreisler, Malcom Arnold and Clive Jenkins, who devised the programme for Jeanie Moore. The concert is on Sunday, 24th September at 3pm.
On Sunday, October 22nd local composer-pianist Marsha de Thornley Head will play a selection of her own music. Some of the pieces have stories narrated by her son, Phineas Head. She will also improvise on notes suggested by the audience. Jeanie Moore is a big fan of her music.
There are two concerts in November. On Sunday 5th Norwegian star baritone Aksel Rykkvin sings songs of the sea accompanied by pianist Zany Denyer. Also featured is violinist Charles Mutter, leader of the BBC Concert Orchestra. The concert includes music by Schubert, Vaughan Williams, Mahler and Norwegian composers. All proceeds will go to Plymouth Music Accord’s educational work.
On Sunday November 19th the Chamber Ensemble of London will present a royal concert. Jeanie Moore received her MVO from Prince Charles (as he then was) and was keen to mark the occasion of his coronation with a special recital of music for, about and even composed by British royalty. Music in many styles – baroque, romantic, light music, jazz. Jeanie Moore hopes to attend.
In February next year Abbey Brass, a quintet from Cornwall, will play ancient music by Locke and Farnaby and modern by Paul McCartney and local composers Judy Whitlock and Andrew Wilson. Grieg contributes a more Romantic element and Handy adds jazz.
In March international clarinettist Peter Cigleris is bringing his Wandle Trio to play music for woodwinds making a special feature of the music of Malcolm Arnold.
Plymouth Concerts is already planning the 2024-25 season.
