Join ‘Sirens of The Sound’ – a new community sewing circle celebrating the working-class history of Plymouth Sound and part of the Plymothian sea re-connection project ‘The Gathering'
The Conscious Sisters CIC are launching Sirens of The Sound – a new, community sewing circle that celebrates the working-class history of Plymouth Sound and those that are part of its heritage - the fishermen, the fisherwomen, the lighthouse keepers, the able seaman, the coastguards, the dockers, the fishmongers, the huers, the net makers, the shipwrights and many more occupations and stories that have been long forgotten.
The brand-new sewing circle comprises of 6 online sessions (one a month) which will run on the first Saturday of every month starting in January 2023 from 10.30am to 12.00 midday. ‘Sirens of the Sound’ online session dates are taking place on:
· Sat 07 January 10:30 - 12:00 GMT
· Sat 04 February 10:30 - 12:00 GMT
· Sat 04 March 10:30 - 12:00 GMT
· Sat 01 April 10:30 - 12:00 BST
· Sat 06 May 10:30 - 12:00 BST
Each session will be a free workshop and will help members produce beautiful, embroidered artwork pieces for an exhibition in Plymouth celebrating the coastline in the summer of 2023.
The sessions will be led by Melinda Schwakhofer - an American artist and citizen of the Muscogee (Creek) Nation with Austrian-American ancestry who now lives and works on Dartmoor – and Karen Evans - lead artist for The Conscious Sisters CIC.
The six sessions will also include guest speakers to help inspire participants with stories of the ocean whilst they sew.
Please note: The six-session programme is a series of sessions not a drop in and it is essential that those who sign up can attend most/all the sessions. All materials will be provided, participants simply connect via a zoom link that will be provided.
