Where to see British Art Show 9 in Plymouth
British Art Show 9 is a touring exhibition that showcases recent art made in Britain. This Autumn, the show is coming to Plymouth, arriving with us from the 8th October to 23 December.
The British Art Show is a unique and exclusive exhibition, organised every 5 years by Hayward Gallery Touring. It offers a special opportunity to see work from artists redefining contemporary art.
As the touring show comes to Plymouth, the art themes take inspiration from and reference to the city’s role in British’s history, especially bringing in other cultures that have enriched our society.
The city-wide exhibition spans across four venues, so here’s all you need to know about how to get to the British Art Show 9 in Plymouth…
Where is British Art Show 9?
The British Art Show 9 in Plymouth runs in four venues across the city; The Box, KARST, The Levinsky Gallery and MIRROR.
The Box
The Box is Plymouth and the South West’s newest major museum, art gallery and archive. The cultural destination is led by Plymouth City Council, and is also a space for food, drinks and shopping.
The Box combines the former Plymouth Museum & Art Gallery, Central Library and St Luke’s Church to create new galleries and exhibition spaces. There’s always something new to discover.
Along with their research and learning facilities, the space also offers a range of collections, programmes and commissions that tell stories of international and local significance.
How do you get to the box? The Box can be found at Tavistock Place, Plymouth, PL4 8AX.
By foot, it’s only a 5 minute walk from Drake Circus and the city centre. If you’re cycling, there are 10 public cycle stands at Tavistock Place and North hill - just remember to bring your lock!
Nearly every Plymouth Citybus stops at Royal Parade - around a 10 minute walk from The Box. A lot of the Plymouth buses stop at North Hill opposite the Box too.
Plymouth’s train station is just 15 minutes away from The Box by foot. The coach station is also within walking distance at just 10 minutes away.
There’s a number of car parks close to The Box. Regent Street is the closest long stay car park. Disabled parking is available at various car parks across the city centre.

KARST
British Art Show 7 was the inspiration behind this artist-led space in Plymouth. KARST produces and shows the best international contemporary art in the most ambitious gallery in the South West.
Founded in 2012, the gallery based in one of the city’s most iconic industrial buildings displays art from a variety of places where art meets life.
The independent arts organisation is supported by Arts Council England. It looks to shape the cultural identity of the city and voice underrepresented members.
How do you get to KARST? KARST is located in the centre of Millbay at 22 George Place, Stonehouse, Plymouth, PL1 3NY.
There’s plenty of parking and public transport links within walking distance of KARST. By car, there’s free street parking outside the building and a number of car parks close by. Limited Blue Badge parking is available onsite.
The main Plymouth bus route at Royal Parade is a 15-minute walk from KARST. Plymouth Coach Station is around 20 minutes by foot.
Plymouth Train Station is also within walking distance, with direct services to London, Bristol, the Midlands, the North, Scotland and Cornwall.

The Levinsky Gallery
The Levinsky Gallery is hosted by the Arts Institute, a wide-ranging public arts programme of the University of Plymouth.
The institute plays a vital role in building the culture and art in Plymouth and the south west. It continues in this role throughout British Art Show 9, as it shows films, talks and bite size shows from various artists.
How do you get to The Levinsky Gallery? The Levinsky Gallery is located at the University of Plymouth’s Roland Levinsky building in Plymouth’s City Centre. Find it at University of Plymouth, Drake Circus, Plymouth, PL4 7LG.
Many Plymouth Citybus stops are located at the University on North Hill, as well as at Royal Parade, around 10 minutes on foot.
The train station and coach station are also both only a short walk away. The multi story carpark opposite the Roland Levinsky building offers ample parking.

MIRROR
MIRROR is a public art gallery, events programme and online resource based in and supported by Arts University Plymouth.
Their focus is to showcase high-quality, contemporary exhibitions and events and enrich teaching learning at the university. They also take art to the wider public to enjoy and debate.
The exhibition programme is shaped heavily by curriculum, but reflects the rich and diverse cultural community of the university and the city.
How do you get to MIRROR? MIRROR is located in the heart of Plymouth’s ‘Cultural Quarter’ at Arts University Plymouth, Tavistock Place, Plymouth, PL4 8AT.
The closest long stay car park is Regent Street, just next door to the location. There’s also plenty of parking at Drake Circus across the street.
The city centre location means there are plenty of Plymouth bus stops nearby, including Royal Parade which is only 10 minutes by foot.
The Arts University Plymouth is within walking distance of both Plymouth train station and coach station, which offer nationwide destinations.
