Updates on North Cross Subway Murals

We re-joined Sue Lewry and Eleanor Tomas at North Cross roundabout to check in on the next two subways, both of which are receiving a fun and creative update.

A few months back we worked with Plymouth City Council and Plymouth City Centre Company to commission this project to brighten up the North Cross subways. Sue and Eleanor’s designs did just that, and their happy and colour designs are now being rolled out on subways two and three.

Designers Sue and Eleanor have been working with experienced street artists Lee Jackson and Roy Christie to bring the murals to life. Keep your eyes peeled for the fourth and final subway, due for it’s fun update soon.

ARTISTs chosen for North Cross Subway murals

A team of artists has been chosen to transform four of Plymouth’s busiest subways with artworks that reflect the city’s “humour, positivity and colour”.

Plymouth artists Sue Lewry and Eleanor Tomas have been selected for the project to reimagine the set of subways following a competitive process.

Sue and Eleanor are responsible for the design concept and artwork of all four subways and are collaborating with experienced street artists Lee Jackson and Roy Christie, who will skillfully translate the designs to painted artworks using hand and spray paint techniques.

Members of the Public Art Steering Group made the final selection which included representatives from Plymouth City Council, Plymouth City Centre Company, Plymouth Artists Together, Plymouth Design Forum and The Box.

ARTIST CaLLOUT FOR NORTH CROSS ROUNDABOUT MURALS

Plymouth City Council and Plymouth Culture are collaborating to bring new murals to North Cross Roundabout’s walls, a pivotal system of under passes that link pedestrians with the railway station, University of Plymouth, Central Park, the City Centre, the Hoe, and surrounding residential districts.

The roundabout was created in the early 1970s as part of the post-war rebuilding programme of Patrick Abercrombie and James Paton-Watson, and is one of the first places visitors see when stepping away from the train station platform. It receives hundreds of Plymothians and visitors to the city every day.

BRIEF

Plymouth City Council and Plymouth Culture would like to commission murals for three subways’ walls in North Cross Roundabout that will brighten up the area, enhance people’s experience of the city, and showcase local talented artists and creatives.

Creatives can submit their ideas to just one wall or an entire subway. The west subway has one wall available and the south and east subways have two walls available (ceiling can be considered).

We believe the role of public art is critical in shaping and manifesting the cultural identity of a place, therefore we would like to invite local artists, designers, and creatives to submit their ideas in response to the question “What makes Plymouth Britain’s Ocean City?”.

We’d like the selected works to capture the city’s positive assets that make its citizens proud and show visitors its value and beauty.
