Whether it be painting a mural on a football changing room, running a craft event in the local park or a poetry festival with residents… the people of Plymouth are brimming with good ideas.
But how do you get your creative project off the ground? Finding funding, the right artist or project support may be what is stopping you.
If that is the case, Vital Sparks is here to help. This city-wide initiative is designed to inspire arts, culture and creativity in Plymouth.
At the heart of Vital Sparks is its funding scheme. Small bursaries from £500 to £5,000 are available to community, youth, residents groups and motivated individuals. Interested groups don’t even need a constitution or a bank account. Vital Sparks can pay for goods or artists for them or you can set up a credit union account for your project.
If you have the seed of an idea you can talk it through with your Vital Sparks Producer before you apply for funding.
Community Sparks storytelling workshop
Sandy Wager from Whitleigh Arts has just received a bursary for £2842 to run the Whitleigh Words Festival. This special series of poetry and word workshops will celebrate 65 years since the first houses in Whitleigh were built. This was Sandy’s first attempt at applying for funding, “I had never written an application for money before but with Fiona’s help and guidance I was surprised at how easy it was to fill in the form and write about my ideas. Fiona was always on hand to guide me through the process and took the fear out of filling in an application for money. If you have a great idea believe in yourself and go for it. I did and I succeeded!”
“An Epic Fishy Tale” produced by Stiltskin Theatre Company and Stonehouse schools
The idea for the three year Vital Sparks project was born out of Plymouth Culture’s ambition to get more people involved in arts and heritage based cultural activities. Igniting passion, imagination and a sense of can-do for groups who want to put on an event, a show, an exhibition, or create a mural or sculpture – anything that encourages people to work together and get creative.
Funded by Arts Council, England this project is an unmissable opportunity to develop working relationships between communities and arts organisations for celebration and change.
